217 jaar geleden schreven twee aboriginals een lied, dat zij zongen op een schip onderweg naar Engeland. In die tijd werkten Australische aboriginals veelal in de scheepvaart, wanwege hun eigen kennis over water en boten. De onderzoeker Keith Vincent Smith ontdekte de oude tekst en het lied, afkomstig van twee aboriginals genaamd Bennelong en Yemerrawanne, en nam het oude lied op in een tentoonstelling genaamd Mari Nawi, in New South Wales in Australie. Mari Nawi betekent Grote Kano’s. Maar het lijkt in mijn ogen al heel erg op Marine en ook op Navy. MARI NAWI in the Sydney (New South Wales, Australian) Aboriginal Language means ‘Big Canoes’ and that is what the Indigenous People called the foreign sailing ships they first saw in 1788.
The exhibition and my book MARI NAWI Aboriginal Odysseys (2010) explain how many of them became sailors, boatmen, guides, go-betweens, sealers, whalers, pilots and trackers and made epic voyages across the world in the ships that brought settlers to take over their country. In 1793, for example, Bennelong’s brother-in-law Gnung-a Gnung-a Murremurgan, sailed to Nootka Sound (Vancouver), the California coast and Hawaii in HMS Daedalus.
