borrelpraat echter als een tang op een varken, als een slagroomtaart
op een sluisdeur en als k*t op Dirkje. Ten eerste: welke Eskimotaal?
Die mensen -die zich overigens liever Inuit noemen omdat Eskimo een
scheldwoord is van Canadese indianen, dat zoiets betekent als ‘die
rare lui die rauw vlees eten’- leven van Alaska tot Groenland tot
Siberië tot Alaska. Dat is een enorm gebied en ze wonen ver van
elkaar. Er is dan ook niet één Eskimotaal, maar er zijn tig
Eskimotalen!
Maar goed, laten we aannemen dat in
elke Eskimotaal er twintig woorden voor sneeuw bestaan. Wat dan nog?
In het Nederlands hebben we vast wel twintig woorden voor regen. En
we kennen hier ook plaksneeuw, stuifsneeuw, natte sneeuw… hoeveel
precies weet ik niet. Misschien geen twintig, maar wel genoeg. Dus
wat is nou helemaal zo bijzonder aan die Noordpoolbewoners?
Iedereen die veel van hetzelfde ziet,
